How to Use a Proxy in Google Chrome (Step-by-Step Guide)

Before you begin with the setup, you will need the IP address and port number of the proxy server you want to use. You can find it within you proxy account and under the “Assigned Proxies” tab.

How to set up a proxy server in Google Chrome

Step 1: Open Chrome settings.

Click the three dots menu in the top right corner and select “Settings.”

Scroll down and click “Advanced” followed by “Open your computer’s proxy settings.”

Step 2: Configure the proxy.

  1. Windows: In the “Internet Properties” window, check the box “Use a proxy server for your LAN” under the “Connections” tab. Enter the proxy IP address and port number in the designated fields.
  2. Mac: In the “Network” window, click on the “Advanced” tab and then the “Proxies” tab. Select HTTP proxy and enter the IP address and port number.

Step 3: Bypass proxy for local addresses (optional).

This improves performance by not routing local traffic through the proxy. You can usually leave this unchecked.

Step 4: Save and verify.

Click “OK” or “Apply” to save your changes.

To verify if the proxy is working, visit an IP checker website like https://ip-check.net.

Confirm that the displayed IP address matches the proxy’s IP instead of your real IP.
